january brought prolonged winter weather, causing many customers to use more energy to heat their homes,” said robbie kemp, vice president, customer service for entergy mississippi. “higher usage can lead to higher-than-normal bills, but we’re committed to providing resources, tools and payment options to help customers manage their energy costs through the winter months.” extreme weather impact and historic energy demand while mississippi did not experience substantial snowfall compared to its neighboring states, the region did experience prolonged cold temperatures. this included 14 days, from jan. 1-26, where temperatures dipped below the average low. this extreme weather caused historic energy consumption as customers relied heavily on heaters and other appliances to stay warm. all entergy companies combined reached a new winter peak load of approximately 21,336 megawatt-hours during the week of jan. 20, surpassing the previous record by nearly 790 mwh. although entergy program’s regular assistance application period runs jan. 6 through the end of march, officials said, or until funds are expended while crisis assistance applications will be accepted through april 30. liheap is a critical, life-saving program that targets and serves the most vulnerable households, including older americans, individuals with disabilities, and families with young children. many rely on fixed monthly incomes, meaning that their pay does not increase when the cost of heating and cooling their homes increases. liheap recipients make heartbreaking choices every day between food, medicine, or utilities. liheap is designed to lower the energy burden by paying benefits for home energy bills for low-income households, who pay a higher proportion of their income for home energy ensure we’re winter-ready. according to the national oceanic and atmospheric administration’s climate prediction center, a developing la niña is expected to persist through the winter season causing a warmer and drier season in our service area. despite these predictions, arkansas weather remains unpredictable, and entergy arkansas will be ready for any extreme weather that may affect our state. entergy arkansas crews have performed a significant review of our preparedness and protections against extreme conditions. this includes developing a comprehensive plan to protect our generation, transmission and distribution systems from extreme cold. we have implemented unique readiness plans for each of our power generation resources that include insulating critical equipment and diligently testing protections based on historical operating experience. our transmission team follows a specialized seasonal readiness program that includes inspection and maintenance of critical lines and their associated breakers, transformers and substation distribution feeders going to generation/natural gas facilities. entergy arkansas crews have inspected critical systems and infrastructure across miles of new distribution lines and enhancing substation equipment, is expected to bring improved stability to the area, providing farmers and residents with the reliable power needed to operate entergy arkansas and the little rock international association of fire fighters (iaff) local 34 have come together to provide winter coats to elementary school students for “operation warm.” through this partnership, hundreds of students in the little rock school district received new coats wednesday, just before the students’ winter break begins. operation warm is a national nonprofit that manufactures high-quality coats and shoes for children in need. the coats are designed and manufactured by the nonprofit to be long-wearing, water repellent and machine washable, with a warm fleece lining, deep pockets to keep little hands warm even without gloves, and detachable hoods. they come in sizes 2t to adult. since 1998, the organization has provided more than 6 million coats to kids in need across the united states. the iaff union 34 began working with the national nonprofit several years ago after seeing a group of young children shivering at a school bus stop near their firehouse. “helping people is our job, but it’s also part of who we are,” said iaff union 34 president matthew stallings. “we work year-round to support this program, and the last few weeks have been a concerted has awarded more than $160,000 to lake hamilton fire &amp; rescue (lhfr) for an environmental grant that will allow the department to contain and cleanup future hazmat incidents on lake hamilton and lake catherine while mitigating spill over from remmel dam into the ouachita river. lhfr used the grant to purchase a rescue and response boat, absorbent booms, diving equipment and other hazmat materials and supplies. some of the materials, most notably the boat, provided the backdrop to today’s announcement event where entergy arkansas senior plant manager braxton bennett and lhfr chief doug davey both spoke about the grant that is already having an impact on the popular central arkansas lakes. “most of our calls for service on the water require some sort of hazmat mitigation,” said davey. “recently, we deployed oil booms and mats to contain and soak up fluids from a front-end loader that rolled into lake catherine. last year, there was large oil sheen on lake hamilton that no near-by agency could mitigate due to a lack of resources. however, through entergy’s generosity, we are now equipped to handle water cleanups and will be able to help preserve and maintain our beautiful lakes for years to come.” lhfr, established in 1958, is the sole emergency fireboat response unit stationed on the 7,460-acred lake hamilton and the 1,940-acred lake catherine. an entergy arkansas employee who lives in the lhfr’s response territory and was aware that the department lacked the resources to handle hazmat incidents encouraged davey to apply for the grant through lhfr’s foundation. “not only are lake hamilton and catherine beautiful destinations for tourists, but they are practically in the backyards of many entergy arkansas employees. a local employee recognized a
